Introduction to the Three-Axis Thread Rolling Machine


A three‑axis thread‑rolling machine is a versatile cold‑extrusion forming device. Within its rated rolling force range, it can perform thread rolling, straight‑thread rolling, and helical‑thread rolling on cold‑state workpieces. This advanced non‑cutting manufacturing process effectively enhances both the internal and surface quality of the workpiece, while the radial compressive stresses generated during processing significantly improve its fatigue strength and torsional resistance.

The three‑axis thread‑rolling machine can effortlessly produce a wide range of tubular threads and is also suitable for knurling, mesh‑pattern rolling, straight‑line rolling, and other processes. It employs an equilateral triangular support system to ensure roundness and perpendicularity, with convenient gauge‑based and stop‑gauge adjustments. Powered by hydraulic drive, it offers easy operation, a stable base, and long‑lasting durability, making it widely used for thread‑rolling on oil‑pipe fittings, automotive, motorcycle, and bicycle components, as well as on air‑conditioner evaporator tubes, various fasteners, condenser copper tubes, and other workpieces.

Features of the three-axis thread-rolling machine:

1. Thread rolling is a plastic deformation process; unlike cutting operations performed on automatic lathes, it produces no metal chips.

2. The thread surface after roll forming can achieve increased strength and hardness due to work hardening.

3. Surface roughness is lower than that achieved by turning, milling, and grinding.

4. Products manufactured on a three-axis thread-rolling machine exhibit superior perpendicularity and concentricity, as well as higher precision, compared to those produced on a two-axis machine.

5. High material utilization; compared with cutting, productivity is doubled, and automation is easily achievable.

6. The roller die has a very long service life. However, thread rolling requires the workpiece material to have a hardness no greater than HRC 40.

7. High dimensional accuracy of the blank (only the blank’s perpendicularity and inherent precision can enable the three-axis thread-rolling machine to produce high‑precision parts).

8. Roll‑forming dies also feature high precision and hardness, making their fabrication quite challenging.

9. Not suitable for rolling threads with asymmetric tooth profiles.

Precautions for Using a Three-Axis Thread Rolling Machine :

1. The coolant used in the three-axis thread-rolling machine must be a water-soluble emulsifiable coolant; oil-based coolants are strictly prohibited, and ordinary lubricating oils may not be used as substitutes.

2. The reducer should be lubricated regularly to maintain the specified oil level.

3. Sliders and slider assemblies should be cleaned and lubricated regularly.

4. During the initial cut, maintain a steady feed rate and avoid rushing forward to prevent chipping or cracking of the cutting edge.

5. It is strictly prohibited to operate machine tools without coolant, except for workpieces made of aluminum, copper, or other relatively soft materials.

6. The coolant tank of the three-axis thread-rolling machine should be cleaned every two weeks.
